"Greetings from the dead," declares Maxwell Broadbent on the videotape he left behind after his mysterious disappearance. A notorious treasure hunter and tomb robber, Broadbent accumulated over a half a billion dollars' worth of priceless art, gems, and artifacts before vanishing---along with his entire collection---from his mansion in New Mexico.

At first, robbery is suspected, but the truth proves far stranger: As a final challenge to his three sons, Broadbent has buried himself and his treasure somewhere in the world, hidden away like an ancient Egyptian pharaoh. If the sons wish to claim their fabulous inheritance, they must find their father's carefully concealed tomb.

The race is on, but the three brothers are not the only ones competing for the treasure. This secret is so astounding it cannot be kept quiet for long. With half a billion dollars at stake, as well as an ancient Mayan codex that may hold a cure for cancer and other deadly diseases, others soon join the hunt---and some of them will stop at nothing to claim the grave goods.
The bestselling coauthor of such page-turning thrillers as Relic and The Cabinet of Curiosities, Douglas Preston now spins an unforgettable tale of greed, adventure, and betrayal.

Love history? Then this is a MUST have on your bookshelf!2010-07-065 / 5
There are books that can be re-read.. over and over and over again! This one.. falls into that category! The plot is well written.. and the reader is brought into the story at an even pace.. until one finishes the novel! Major thumbs up!
Powerful and a page turner full of thrills2010-06-265 / 5
Truly a great read and a real page turner could not put it down like so many of thier books.
Predictable but Entertaining2010-06-054 / 5
An eccentric millionaire takes a half a billion dollars worth of treasure, buries it with himself in a tomb and leaves instructions for his three sons to find it if they want to claim their inheritance. Each son has his own reasons for wanting the treasure but central to the plot is an ancient Mayan manuscript (codex) that contains ancient and undiscovered medical cures.

Typical treasure hunt story with predictable characters and a predictable outcome. But author Douglas Preston writes it in a way that makes the reading fast and enjoyable. If you haven't read any of Preston's works this would be a good, quick place to start. I liked some of his other books a little better but you won't be disappointed with "The Codex".

More enlightening than watching TV, but really just "ok" or mediocre for a book2009-09-193 / 5
Many other people have given feedback on the plot. To me it was highly predictable, I knew what was going to happen after just a few chapters. It was entertaining, but not a book I would specifically recommend.
